Green beans!

They look awesome! I’m so excited!

Garden progress

These are the best looking plants of the bunch. Watermelon. And I used old seeds too.  Pretty awesome.   Below is the second watermelon plant. I honestly didn’t think that any watermelon would come up at all. I planted about 10 seeds and these two plants came up.

These are carrots. I planted the rest of the packet, old seeds. I didn’t think any would come up. Happy surprise.

This is thyme. Old seeds again. I planted some last year, but it did NOT do well. I hope this continues in a good way. I use thyme a lot in my cooking.

A green bean starting to come through. I love green beans. I hope we get loads of green beans so I can can them.

This is broccoli. Not too bad. I’ve never grown it before. It looks super interesting.  The kids are having fun looking in the milk jugs.

Maybe I got a little overzealous in the amount of seeds that I put in each container. I guess I’m used to having old seeds. But these are awesome. I’m so excited!

Garden Beds

Little ones have been digging in my raised bed. 😞

My husband started  putting together more beds as we are expanding our garden.

We’re going to buy some dirt tonight. I’m excited. Time to start some more seeds tomorrow.

Beginning of a Garden

I started some seeds today using some of Jiffy’s Organic Seed Starting Mix. I had been saving my egg cartons for someday when we have chickens and live on a farm. But I realized recently that that probably won’t happen for another 20-30 years, so hey, I’ll use them for seed starting.

After starting I realized that I should have used warm water to moisten the soil, so I switched to that in the middle. I don’t have a heating mat, so I’m guessing that that will help it along a little bit. I started strawberries, beefsteak tomatoes, roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and pink brandywine tomatoes, lavender, chives, lettuce, nasturtiums, petunias, and marigolds. It is a little early to be planting the flowers, but they are old seeds and I don’t know if they’ll come up. Hopefully the flowers will help with the nasty bug population by attracting good predator bugs.

While I was planting, one of my daughters knocked over the cup of water that I was using to moisten the soil. It got all over the rest of the seed packets. I set them all out to dry, hopefully it’s not screwed up.

Reading a Good Book Outside

The weather lately has been wonderful. It feels pretty awesome to be outside (except for the inevitable muddy shoes… and pants). I love reading while watching the kids play outside. I’m reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life. It’s a really entertaining read also very informative. One new goal for this year, kind of inspired by this book and others I’ve read is that I’m going to try to reduce our family’s meat intake so I can buy an organic chicken and make it last. We already do two days vegan, and one other main meal meatless.
